Current and Ongoing Programs

The center offers two types of workshops. One type of workshops are designed  for individuals enabling them to acquire a bird's eye view of the philosophy and format of a particular program offered by the center. The other type of workshops are for teachers, administrators, social workers & therapists and for persons  involved in policy and decision making in private institutions and government agencies.

WORKSHOPS FOR INDIVIDUALS:

1. SCIENCE THROUGH l50 CONCEPTS AND SKILLS: This is a hands-on workshop based on the NALT  format of teaching and learning. Here participants will be able to see that science studied conceptually and chronologically is not all that difficult a subject. This is a good introductory workshop for students who wish to enroll in the 40 week Basic and Applied Science course.

This is a one day, 8 hour workshop given on the second Monday of January, April, and October. It is available only as a day workshop. Registration is required. Fee for the workshop is $l00.00.

2. MICROBIOLOGY, A CAREER AND AN INTRODUCTION TO SCIENCE: This is a hands-on eight hour workshop given over two days (4 hours each day). The workshop is conducted in a laboratory setting where the participants can get a first hand experience of how teaching and learning Microbiology (and for that matter, any other subject) by the NALT  teaching and learning format can expedite their personal and professional growth.

This workshop is offered as a day and as an evening workshop on the first Monday of February, May, June and August and concludes on the following day. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Fee for the workshop is $l00.00.

3. YOU DON'T NEED A JOB TO MAKE A LIVING:  This workshop explores alternate means of making a living where your sense of self worth and an understanding of science and technology can enable you to embark on an entrepreneurial career.

This is a one day, 8 hour, day workshop, given on the first Thursday of March, May and October. Registration is required. Fee for the workshop is $l00.00.

WHY SCIENCE WORKSHOPS?

Living in a Science and Technology based society and not knowing much about it makes us feel less of a person than we actually are. This is the beginning of low self esteem causing us psychological trauma that lingers with us the rest of our lives, stifling our potential.

Our kids suffer the most from this phenomenon which begins to manifest during or soon after the ninth grade when eighth grade's General Science suddenly becomes Chemistry, Physics and Biology for which they were never prepared for. Students generally blame themselves for not understanding this kind of Science. Most thus opt to quietly leave Science not realizing that this void in their intellectual development will haunt them the rest of their lives.

We are trying to prevent this damage from occurring by offering hands on workshops to kids as young as 11 year olds and above. These workshops are based on a new integrated Science curriculum which teaches 150 concepts and skills that scientists use to do science. These represent the missing information that the students did not have as they entered the ninth grade, lacking which made Chemistry, Physics and Biology so difficult to understand.

These workshops also reverse the damage previously done to young people now adults who experience through these workshops that science was not all that difficult after all. This helps restore their self confidence enabling them to embark anew on developing their unrealized potential.

We make no age distinction in these workshops. Adults of all ages, including senior citizens, are equally welcome. These workshops enable people to look at Science not as something to run from but as something to embrace, enjoy and feel fulfilled as a result.

Details of these workshops including the registration form are given below.

In order to make these workshops available to as wide a sector of our society as possible, I am asking you to cut paste and e-mail this entire information package to friends all over the country and the world, especially friends and families in the Chicago area. Ask your friends to do the same

No one can change the world alone. We must network and bring opportunities to others so they too can grow.

We need sponsors to support kids from poor families. Many kids from poor families can't afford these workshops even at the low cost of $30.00 per workshop with parents encouraged to attend for free. Please consider sponsoring a kid for one or more workshops This is the only place where kids and their parents interact with each other away from the strife and struggle of life. We are thus not only getting a kid hooked onto Science, we are also bringing families together.

Please note that we are a subsidiary of a tax exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code. All contributions are deductible to the extent of the law.

PRESS RELEASE

Professor takes the sting out of science
Reduces science to 150 concepts and skills
Offers hands on science workshops and courses.

If Chemistry, Physics and Biology been bothering you, you are not alone, says R. Haque, Associate Professor (Emeritus) University of Illinois Chicago. These subjects as written in the text books are not science. These are a compilation of results which came out of doing science. You have been spinning your wheels memorizing these subjects and then wondering why you don't understand science.

To understand science you must do science, not just memorize it. Haque has reduced science to 150 concepts and skills that scientists use to do science. These he calls the Rules and the Tools of Science which are not that difficult to learn for he has been teaching these to students as young as 11 year old. Science learned that way is not difficult but fun, says Haque.

Haque has been teaching science via his concept and skills based curriculum for a number of years through the Science center that he established in Chicago. Over the years he has put through approximately 3,000 students of various ages ranging from 12 to 65, both male and female, belong to various ethnic groups, mostly without any science background. He has also taught high school and college drop outs and some who after graduating from college were still trying to find themselves. He has also worked with emotionally or physically challenged persons including hearing impaired. All learned remarkably well, enjoying, retaining and using the information and the skills they acquired, eventually working as lab technicians or going onto higher education.

The results were so overwhelmingly positive that he has often wondered whether learning disabilities and ADD are really as prevalent in our population as we are currently given to believe. How much of the ADD is a result of confusion which clarity of perception and understanding will prevent from manifesting, says Haque.

This form of teaching science also turned out to be very therapeutic for it removed cobwebs of confusion and doubts releasing the being within to full actualization. A new system of therapy called Technotherapy™ thus emerged out of these teaching activities.

Haque is now opening the Science Center to the public where students of all ages can come to learn Science via hands on lab courses and workshops. The center is offering a number of workshops and courses this summer.

For registration information contact the Center for General and Applied Education, 729. Western Avenue, Chicago, Illinois USA, 60612. Phone: 312-243-7716; Fax: 312-243-2041. You can also visit their website: www.iibbt.com. Haque believes that since we all live in a science and technology based society, running away from science and technology just makes us feel bad about ourselves. His teaching approach can help you remedy that. No age is too old to get back to science, says Haque.
